Extraordinary Ministers of Communion

The term Extraordinary Minister is an interesting term.  It is one of those quirks from Canon Law.  For the Church, the 'Ordinary' ministers of the Eucharist are the Priest and Deacon.  When other people take on the ministering of the Eucharist, they are over and above the regular ministers, or they are 'extra'.  This concept is a rather late development in the life of the Church.  Besides the priest and deacon, lay people have been commissioned to serve as Ministers of Communion at Mass as well as taking Communion to the sick and shut-ins, whether in homes, hospitals or long term care facilities.

Each week in our Parish, there can be more than 25 people unable to join us physically at Mass who are intimate members of our Community, through the extension of our Eucharistic Table beyond the four walls.  It is an important ministry physically and spiritually.

During Mass, Extraordinary Ministers serve at the table ministering the Cup and the Plate.  At the end of Mass, you may have noticed people called forth just after Communion to receive little containers called a 'pyx'.  These ministers are commissioned to take Communion to family, the sick and shut-ins in our Parish community.
