Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHC)

The term Extraordinary Minister is an interesting term.  It is one of those quirks from Canon Law.  For the Church, the 'Ordinary' ministers of the Eucharist are the Bishop, Priest and Deacon. Besides the Bishop, Priest and Deacon, lay people have been commissioned to serve as Ministers of Communion at Mass, as well as taking Communion to the sick and shut-ins, whether in homes, hospitals or long term care facilities.

These Extraordinary Ministers are deputed by the Bishop at the request of the Pastor to assist the celebrant and other Ordinary Ministers during Liturgy, in distributing the Eucharistic Body and Blood of Christ. Individuals are commissioned by the Pastor or his delegate

Each week in our Parish, there can be more than 25 people unable to join us physically at Mass who are intimate members of our Community, through the extension of our Eucharistic Table beyond the four walls of our church.  It is an important ministry physically and spiritually!

During Mass, Extraordinary Ministers serve at the table ministering from the Chalic and the Paten the Eucharistic wine and bread - the Body and Blood of Christ. At the end of Mass, you may have noticed people called forth just after Communion to receive little containers called a 'pyx'.  These ministers are commissioned to take Communion to family, the sick and shut-ins in our Parish community.
