Roman Catholic Initiation of Adults
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A) is the way by which adults prepare for full initiation into the Catholic Church. If there are enough candidates formation journey. will be held in the fall each year. This journey is comprised of several stepping stones leading to the Easter Vigil, the annual celebation where the full initiation of adults takes place. Through weekly participation in the gathering of the Community each Sunday (or Saturday evening Vigil mass which is considered a Sunday celebration), through reflection on the Gospel of the day, through gathering with the other candidates for reflection and instruction, the candidate is helped along on their faith journey leading to baptism, confirmation and welcoming to the Lord's Table as they are embraced as full members.
Those baptized in other denominations have their own journey which may parallel or be involved with the journey of the non-baptised, depending on their preparedness. That is a discussion for the candidate, the RCIA team and the Pastor.
Once a person reaches their seventh year, traditionally referred to as the age of reason, they are no longer initiated into the community in the same way as an infant. They are prepared for initiation following the model of the Adult Rite of Initiation, except that it is adapted for their age and circumstance.
